Additional Information from the business
The following activities are available to people with a disability:
The 'Limitations to Participation' section outlines some of the possible barriers to participation in our programs for people with a disability. However, this is highly contextual due to the nature of the disability and the type of program being undertaken. As a mobile outdoor adventure activity business, we have no control over the nature and facilities at the camping and activity locations used.
There are cases where clearly an activity is not available e.g. there is no wheelchair access along most of the Bibbulmun Track. In other situations, please discuss your needs with us and we can consider what adjustments might be possible and reasonable.
Examples where our activities will accommodate a particular disability:
- low-vision participants would be able to paddle in our double sea kayaks with a sighted partner.
- clear, explicit and sequenced instructions can be provided to assist participants with Autism.
- participants able to walk but unable to carry a full hiking pack can carry a modified load.
- participants able to paddle, who have a lower limb impairment, can in some instances (such as the Nornalup accessible kayak launch) be assisted to enter and exit the kayaks and participate.
- where we provide menus for self-catering, various dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for e.g. Vegetarian, Halal, Lactose or Gluten Free.
The equipment utilised to make the activities available are:
We do not generally use modified equipment, but instead modify the way we provide the activities to accommodate a particular need, where we can reasonably do so.
Examples of facilities we can access include the accessible kayak launch facility at Nornalup, or Wheelchair accessible (Grade 1) walking trails.
The following limitations apply to participation, including those activities that are not available to people with a disability:
Participation in our activities is limited by the natural environments in which we operate, the lightweight off-grid style of our programs, and the hiking, paddling and camping equipment and locations we use. Where we can make a reasonable adjustment to our program, equipment or activity, we will endeavour to do so - please discuss this with us in relation to a particular disability and program context.
Hiking: We generally use trails such as the Bibbulmun Track that have steps, soft sand, beach sections, steep and uneven terrain.
Paddling: We use double sea kayaks with 'sit in' cockpits and a double blade paddle. Participants need to be able to enter and exit these from river bank and sloping beach locations, and must be able to safely exit craft in the event of a capsize. Participants must have sufficient water confidence to manage in the event of capsize.
Camping: Campsites vary between caravan parks with some level of disability access, and largely unmodified wilderness style campsites. Accommodation is generally in small hiking tents. Cooking is generally in Trangia Spirit Stoves on the ground.
